MALLET AND CHISEL

In this illustration we see how an African adz with a narrow blade is being transformed into a mallet and chisel without much effort.

In circle shown top left we see an adz with blade "A" and a handle "B". When we move clockwise, the next circle shows us a handle "B" without a blade. The next circle shows a wooden fitting "C", which will be used to replace handle "B". In the next circle we see the fitted handle "C" and the chisel blade "B" in place. Previous Page

Next we see woodcarver turning the head, or handle back "B" towards his chisel and use it as a mallet. He will use the large rounded portion of his mallet to strike the handle "C" of his chisel.

Thus we have seen an object we call an "adz" transform itself into a mallet and chisel. We will explore ways in which the culture has shaped to African principles and beliefs.
